I am on a non-touchbar MacBook Pro with OS 10.13.6. I had both and MX Master and MX Master 2S connected and working via Bluetooth. All of the sudden they both stopped working and would no longer connect (I don't think I had done any software update at that exact point in time?). They both still connect fine via the Unifying USB dongle, and I can successfully connect other Bluetooth devices to my laptop.

I've gone through all the existing posts I could google about this issue and none of those solutions helped, and none of those posts explicitly mention this exact issue.

This laptop only has two USB ports so I only consider the Unifying dongle a temporary and unsatisfying fix. Thanks.

Hey guys, I've been putting up with a pretty annoying problem on my less than 1 year old iPhone 3gs. It's the iPod mode onscreen volume control bar. The problem seems to be irratic. Whenever I drag the onscreen volume knob to adjust the volume, it just keeps bouncing back by itself. Even when I attempt to hold the volume there by keeping my thumb pressed down it just jerks and stubbornly flies back to the glitched volume. I am pretty sure it's a software problem cause I have the same problem when I set it to landscape mode. However, I may only adjust the volume properly by using the volume buttons on the side of my iPhone. I just hate to know thaty iPhone is glitched!
Does anyone else have this problem as well? Could it be something to do with the apps I use? I do play games like GTA and Peggle. Another point to note is that when I turn off and on my iPhone, the problem goes away for a whole but then randomly recurs again without fail.
I've tried restoring my iPhone using iTunes and resyncing using the backed up data but the problem persists.. Help!

Firstly, it is important to remember that only Multiple Choice, Word Clouds, and Open Ended activities can accept text message responses. With the release of macOS Catalina, 32-bit app support is no longer available, which means many of your older apps will no longer work if they haven't been updated to 64-bit.

32-bit vs. 64-bit

32-bit apps date back to a time when there were 32-bit processors and 32-bit operating systems, but are now outdated. Apple has long since transitioned to 64-bit processors and macOS has been 64-bit since the launch of Snow Leopard in 2009.

Compared to 32-bit apps, 64-bit apps can take advantage of more memory and offer faster system performance. Apple technologies like Metal only work with 64-bit apps, and for Apple to ensure that Mac apps include all of the latest advancements and optimizations, support for 32-bit needs to end. In the simplest terms, 32-bit apps are inefficient.

Jan 12, 2020  Be sure to delete any existing High Sierra installer, or put it on an external drive and then disconnect that disk from your computer. Then, download a new copy from the App Store. Your Mac doesn't support Catalina, so you'd have to try one of the patches to allow it to run on an unsupported computer. I'd say you're better off using High Sierra.

32-bit apps can run on a 64-bit system as they've been doing for years, but Apple wants to get rid of outdated apps to make sure everything that runs on the Mac is properly optimized and isn't an unnecessary drain on system resources.

Previous Warnings

Apps To Get Rid Of On Mac Sierra 2017

Apple started warning Mac users about plans to end support for 32-bit apps back with macOS High Sierra. In High Sierra, users started getting warnings about a 32-bit app's future incompatibility with macOS.

A similar message was available in macOS Mojave, and if you opened up a 32-bit app while running Mojave, you saw an alert letting you know a specific app wouldn't work with future versions of macOS unless it was updated.

Alerts re-appeared every 30 days when launching an app, with Apple aiming to make sure customers would not be caught unaware when a 32-bit app stopped working in the future, so you should already know if one of your frequently used apps hasn't been upgraded to 64-bit.

Upon updating to ‌macOS Catalina‌, you'll be shown a list of 32-bit apps that no longer work on your system.

How to Check if an App is 32-Bit or 64-Bit in macOS Mojave

To determine whether an app is 64-bit or 32-bit and to see if there are 32-bit apps installed on your machine before upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌, follow these steps:

1. Click the Apple symbol () in the menu bar on your Mac's desktop.
2. Click on About This Mac.
3. Choose 'System Report' at the bottom of the window.
4. Scroll down to the Software list on the sidebar.
5. Select Legacy Software.'

Anything in the list of Legacy Software applications is a 32-bit app and will not work when upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌.

If Legacy Software isn't an option in the sidebar, select the Applications option and then check the list of apps at the right. The column that's labeled 64-bit will show a 'No' listing for apps that are 32-bit.

How to Prepare to Update to ‌macOS Catalina‌

The first step is to make sure there aren't already available updates for apps that you have on your system, which you can generally do by updating through the Mac App Store for ‌Mac App Store‌ apps.

Apps outside of the ‌Mac App Store‌ use other update methods that can vary by app, but for many, you can click on the app's name in the menu bar and choose the 'Check for Updates' option. Some other apps have more hidden update methods, so if you do have a 32-bit app, make sure to Google how to update it to be sure there's not already new software available.

After ensuring you've updated everything you're able to update, you can contact developers and ask them to update their apps, but if that doesn't pan out, the only other solution is to start the search for an alternative app if you're committed to upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌ or have already done so.

32-Bit App Warnings When Installing Catalina

When upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌, the installer will show a list of recently used apps that are 32-bit so you know what to expect before installing.

After viewing this list, you can choose to either cancel or continue with the installation.

‌macOS Catalina‌ also shows a stop symbol over the icon of 32-bit apps in the Finder, so you know that the app isn't going to open.

Aperture

With the release of ‌macOS Catalina‌, Aperture is going to stop working. Apple warned Aperture users in April 2019 that the software won't run in future versions of macOS, starting with ‌macOS Catalina‌.

If you're an Aperture user, you'll have to transition to alternate photo editing and management software, such as Adobe's Lightroom. Aperture is not 32-bit, but Apple is phasing it out all the same.

Affected Media Formats

Certain media files that use older formats and codecs are also not compatible with macOS after macOS Mojave due to the 64-bit transition, and you will need to convert some iMovie and Final Cut Pro X libraries. Incompatible media files were created using codecs that rely on QuickTime 7, and while macOS Mojave has QuickTime 7 frameworks, future versions of macOS will not.

Apple has a full list of media formats that are going to be affected by the transition available in a support document.

Continuing to Use 32-Bit Apps

In macOS Mojave and earlier versions of macOS like High Sierra, you can continue to use your 32-bit apps. If you have a 32-bit app that you absolutely depend on, you're going to want to think twice before upgrading to ‌macOS Catalina‌.

You can think of the Canon CanoScan LiDE220 Color Image Scanner ($89.99) as either a low-end photo scanner that can't scan film, or as a high-end model for people who don't need to scan film and don't want to pay extra for a feature they'll never use. Either way, it offers excellent output quality, with a 4,800 pixel-per-inch (ppi) optical resolution and extras like automatic color restoration for faded photos. Basics and Setup

The LiDE220 offers little physical change from the model it's replacing, with the same optical resolution and other key specifications, including the same size and weight, at 1.6 by 9.9 by 14.4 inches (HWD) and 3 pounds 6 ounces. The software is different, but it delivers much the same capabilities and limitations as the software that comes with the Canon LiDE 210.

Canon's My Image Garden serves as a photo album, complete with some photo-enhancement commands. There's no photo editing program or any other application included, but the scan utility offers built-in optical character recognition (OCR), so in addition to being able to scan to image PDF format, you can scan directly to searchable PDF files. You can also scan to editable text, although that's limited to scanning to Notepad, which loses all formatting information.

As with the Canon LiDE 120, the LiDE220 bucks the current trend of adding connector modules to online systems, like Evernote or Facebook, for direct scanning to the cloud. However, if you install, say, the Evernote app on your computer, you can set the scan utility to save files to the directory that the cloud app is monitoring, and let the app send the scan to the cloud for you.

Setup is typical for a USB model that gets power over the USB connection. Simply install the software and connect the supplied USB cable. In addition to Canon's My Image Garden, the LiDE220 comes with a Quick Menu that serves as a scan utility, a second utility called Canon IJ Scan Utility, plus Twain and WIA drivers, which between them will let you scan from almost any Windows program that has a scan command.

Scanning

Scanning with the LiDE220 is easy. However, it can be confusing, because Canon gives you several choices for how to start a scan, including physical buttons on the front of the scanner and choosing from assorted on-screen buttons in its Canon IJ Scan Utility, its Quick menu, and My Image Garden. If the buttons matched in each case, going from one set of choices to another would be easy, but, unfortunately, they don't.

Only the front panel, for example, includes buttons for Copy (to print a scanned document) and Send (to email a scan). And only the IJ Scan Utility and My Image Garden have a Stitch button to let you scan originals up to twice the size of the 8.5-by-11.7-inch platen in two steps, and then automatically stitch the two scans together into one image. Even where the button functions match from one approach to another, they don't always have the same, or even similar, names, and they don't show up in the same order in each case.

Probably the best strategy for learning how to use the scanner is to get thoroughly familiar with one approach before moving to another. Once you're familiar with all of them, you can settle on the one you feel most comfortable with.

That said, to get started scanning, you can simply choose the AutoScan button on the front of the scanner. AutoScan analyzes the image and saves the file in either JPG image format or searchable PDF format. I tried it with both photos and text pages, and it picked the right format each time.

Scan Quality

The AutoScan feature does a good enough job that it may be all you ever need. You can also change settings for each scan option if you like. And if you prefer, you can adjust settings in the Twain driver manually before each scan. As with most scanners today, the LiDE220's driver offers both a Basic mode, with only a few settings, and an Advanced mode that gives you lots of control.

In addition to adjusting basics like resolution, contrast, and brightness, the driver offers digital enhancements, including a color-restore option that did an excellent job in my tests of bringing faded photos back to life. Will this only work if you are using a 10.5 Mac and trying to connect to another 10.5 Mac? What if I have a Mac running 10.5 and the Mac I am trying to control is on 10.4 or 10.3.9? The screen sharing worked last night for me connecting from my MBP running 10.5 to my MacMini G4 running 10.4 just peachy. I had previously been using Apple's RDC product to do that, so I don't know what other setup might have been necessary if screen sharing hadn't been turned on already on the mini.

Yes, you can use Leopard's Screen Sharing app to connect to Mac's running older versions of Mac OS X.
Leopard's Screen Sharing app is just a VNC client (like Chicken of the VNC). It is the first time a VNC client has been included in the client version of Mac OS X. AFAIK, it is a normal VNC client, so can connect to any VNC server, even those running on Linux or Windoze boxes.
Keep in mind that even the client version of Tiger (and i think Panther too) has a built-in VNC server, which can be activated from System Preferences. So you do not necessarily need to run a non-Apple VNC server to control Mac's running older versions of Mac OS X.
I have a Mac on my LAN running Tiger, with Screen Sharing enabled in the System Preferences, and my Leopard Mac sees it automagically via Bonjour; double clicking its icon in the Finder automatically initiates a Screen Sharing session. Too cool!

I was actually wondering if it would allow true internet addresses (mapped to the appropriate IP address), such as http://www.something.com. I have my computer IP address mapped to and dynamically updated to an internet 'http' address so that I don't have to remember my dynamically changing IP address (dumb cable company).

http and vnc are different protocols, but they use the same addressing. It will work with any hostname as long as it can resolve it to the IP address of a computer running a VNC/ARD server, but if you use http for the protocol part of the address, it will think you're trying to access a web page (or possibly webdav share) and it will connect the wrong software to the wrong port and you won't get screen sharing. In the case of your example, you would want vnc://www.something.com (although it's unlikely that the www subdomain will be used in this case).

Don't forget, you can also type 'vnc://xxx.xxx.xxx (the x's are the IP number) in Safari. It'll launch the Screen Sharing app.

This implies that it works using VNC, so Macs running older OSes should be available.. (..in response to the first comment too.)

What password does it ask for?

It asks for the username and password of an account on the Mac to which you are connecting. I wasn't able to get it to work with my default long name ('firstname lastname') but was successful by changing it to my shortname ('firstname'). Then my normal password worked.

Oh, so it is just VNC? That's disappointing.
I hoped Apple could create some smarter protocol that would be aware of windows, scrollable views, buttons, etc. so basic UI interaction could work quickly without transferring all the pixels over the wire.

So many apps today -- particularly on OS X -- are full of custom widgets and eye candy that what you're suggesting it really more trouble than it's worth. Bandwidth is cheap and the compression used by VNC is good and fast.

When the server has a decent driver built in to the OS that knows exactly when and which pixels have changed (as seems to be the case here) there's not much gained by doing things the hard way, and a lot to be lost in complexity and incompatibility.

VNC is a standard tool, with software for almost any platform you can think of. Using this makes the Screen Sharing feature vastly more useful for people working in mixed environments. I applaud Apple for building useful, free VNC server and client tools right into Leopard.

The expanded availability of screen sharing seems to indicate that Apple have seriously overhauled their VNC server. The VNC implementation in ARD is notoriously cruddy, implementing neither the better encodings, nor the server-side hooks into the windowing system necessary for good performance.
99% of the experience of a VNC session is decided by the quality of the server. One that's tightly linked into OS X's compositor should perform very well.

When it's as well implemented and as fast as Apple have made it this time (a VAST improvement over the VNC implementation built into ARD), I'm glad they've stuck with a tried and true protocol - meaning that I can use it to admin a wide range of hardware that already supports VNC.
Right at this moment, I'm using Screen Sharing to access an old Windows 2000 server. Works beautifully and is noticeably faster than CotVNC.

It's actually a lot better then just vnc. I have an xp pro machine with ultravnc server on it. On the mac I connect to server, type in vnc://11.22.33.44 (the ip of said machine) it brings up the screen sharing app and asks for a password with the option to save it in keychain [sic] It then has the following message:

The computer '192.168.0.15' is running a VNC server that does not support Screen Sharing keystroke encryption. Text you type to this computer may be intercepted over the network. Do you want to continue connecting anyway?
If the remote computer has Remote Login or SSH enabled, you can select the 'Encrypt all network data' setting in Screen Sharing's preferences to connect securely.

booking.com helps people to find hotels, flights, car rentals, and other similar travel-related services. This site is legitimate, but criminals generate revenue by promoting booking.com affiliate links via fake Adobe Flash Player updaters. Fake Adobe Flash Player updaters add a booking.com website shortcut to the Mac Dock. However, because security is a tricky business, so-called improvements for some might not work for others. Specifically, Apple's decision to make Gatekeeper even more difficult crack is a significant step forward for everyday Mac users. For developers, perhaps not so much. Luckily, there's a workaround. As its name suggests, the tool has been designed to check recently downloaded apps for known malware and sends it to quarantine. In his June article, The Great Mac Balancing Act, Rene Ritchie explains: Currently, when you download an app, whether it's off the Store or the Web or even from AirDrop, that app is quarantined. If and when you try to open a quarantined app, Gatekeeper checks it for known malware, validates the developer signature to make sure it hasn't been tampered with, makes sure it's allowed to run, for example matches your settings for App Store apps and/or known developer apps, and then double checks with you that you really want to run the app for the first time, that it's not trying to pull a fast one and autorun itself. Until now, Gatekeeper didn't take the same approach with apps launched via Terminal. It also didn't check non-quarantined apps and files for malware. In other words, it checked an app only once for malware. Significant changes have arrived with macOS Catalina. Now, apps started through Terminal are also checked. These files get the same malware scan, signature check, and local security policy check. The difference: even on the first run, you only need to explicitly approve software launched in bundles, like a standard Mac app bundle, not for standalone executables or libraries. With macOS Catalina, perhaps more significantly, Gatekeeper will also check non-quarantined apps and files for problems. Not just once or twice, but every time you run it. When your Mac detects a problem, it blocks the file, then sends you an alert. If all this sounds fantastic to you, terrific. That's undoubtedly Apple's intent. However, some developers might view this differently and find the changes cumbersome, at best. A Workaround Even though Gatekeeper in macOS is now stricter than ever, there is a way around it -- i]]>
